Equivocal Performance Supplements

Most sports supplement claim to help athletes in some way. But research shows that only a few supplements have proven benefits for athletes. Sports supplements are considered dietary supplements.

Dietary supplements are products taken by mouth to support the diet. Dietary supplements do not need U. Food and Drug Administration FDA approval before they are sold. Companies that make supplements are supposed to follow the FDA's current good manufacturing practices to ensure quality and safety of their product.

But this doesn't always happen and some supplements may contain drugs or additives not listed on the label. Creatine pronounced: KREE-eh-teen is a substance made in the body. It is involved in making energy for muscle contractions. Man-made creatine is sold as a powder or pill and in energy bars and drink mixes.

Studies show that it can help athletes who do sports that have short bursts of intense exercise with short recovery times such as sprinting and powerlifting. Few studies have looked at the long-term safety of creatine use by teens.

Some research shows that it can harm the kidneys. Doctors usually recommend it be used only by athletes over 18 years old.

Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, help build muscle. Amino acids used as supplements include glutathione, cysteine, arginine, leucine, glutamine, and citrulline. They're usually sold as a pill or powder.

Ads for amino acid supplements say they improve endurance, lower protein breakdown, and reduce soreness from exercise. But most studies do not show benefits to taking amino acid supplements. Some amino acid supplements may cause serious side effects.

There aren't enough long-term studies to know if amino acid supplements are safe for teens. Most protein supplements are made of the proteins casein and whey. The supplements usually come as powders that can be mixed with water, milk, milk substitute, or other liquid.

Protein supplements are often advertised as a way to build muscle. But most people get all the protein they need in their diet. A protein supplement may help someone who doesn't get enough protein in their diet.

This can happen:. In general, protein supplements do not seem to cause serious side effects. In high doses, they can cause:. As with other supplements, long-term studies in teens haven't been done. Most doctors agree that it is best for teens to get their protein from their diet.

There is some evidence that caffeine can boost sports performance. Caffeine is in many products, including energy drinks , soda, energy chews, and pills. It is important to remember that many of the claims that sports supplement companies make are not proven.

Known as ergogenic aids, these dietary supplements may enhance strength and endurance while helping keep your body as healthy as possible. Any supplement you take to help you in the gym, at the office, or in daily life is inherently performance-enhancing.

Many athletes rely on supplements designed to improve exercise performance and recovery. Ergogenic aids can safely enhance and support sports performance, helping everyone from bodybuilding competitors to endurance athletes such as cyclists achieve better physical performance.

Many athletes take one or more performance-enhancing supplements to get a competitive edge. If you regularly engage in any form of high-intensity exercise, nutritional supplements could be the answer to breaking through a plateau or getting the results you want. Just be sure to choose your supplements carefully to avoid wasting money or facing health risks.

Professional advice is equally crucial for non-athletes who are just starting out. The essential thing to remember is that not all performance-enhancing substances are safe for over-the-counter use. Anabolic steroids such as dehydroepiandrosterone DHEA and androstenedione andro fall under the category of ergogenic aids.

However, they can cause severe long-term and short-term side effects. Some health risks of anabolic steroids include:. Because of this, they have never been tested or approved by the Food and Drug Administration FDA and could pose serious health risks to athletes.

The full, long-term side effects of anabolic steroids many include other issues that are not on this or any list. Additionally, it is illegal to use anabolic steroids without a prescription and oversight from a healthcare provider. In addition to anabolic steroids such as DHEA and so-called designer drugs, other dangerous or illegal ergogenic aids include:.

The above ergogenic aids are potentially harmful, banned in Olympic competitions, and often illegal when used without a prescription.

However, diuretics are an exception to the rule in that people can sometimes use them safely and without supervision from a professional. Some diuretics, like acetazolamide, are used by athletes to mask the presence of other banned substances.

However, caffeine from other diuretics like coffee or tea is safe for moderate use in conjunction with balanced nutrition. For more information on banned and dangerous performance-enhancing substances, check out the National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA list of banned substances.

Many performance-enhancing supplements offer safe options for improving athletic performance. Branched-chain amino acids , or BCAAs, include leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These three essential amino acids have a unique, branched chemical structure that allows the mitochondria in skeletal muscle tissue to metabolize them.

BCAAs can provide energy during exercise when metabolized, possibly providing greater strength and muscle mass gains from training. With no reported adverse effects for doses of up to 20 grams per day for up to six weeks, BCAAs fall under the category of safe and legal performance-enhancing supplements.

In addition, Ingredient Optimized options such as ioBCAA offer increased bioavailability of each of the three essential amino acids to ensure you receive the best possible benefits.

Protein is one of the most common performance-enhancing supplements among athletes and non-athletes alike. Protein assists with building, maintaining, and repairing muscle tissue, and it has been proven effective in numerous clinical trials.

A quality protein supplement can optimize muscle training response during and after exercise. There are no adverse effects or safety concerns reported at daily recommended intakes for athletes of up to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight one kilogram equals 2.

These products have been scientifically proven to offer better bioavailability than non-optimized protein supplements, ensuring you see results and are not wasting your money.

Iron deficiency is common in athletes and can affect performance, according to some research. While it can occur in males, this deficiency is more common in females, especially those in endurance sports. Additional research found that low iron levels can cause many adverse symptoms in female athletes, including reducing endurance and increasing the amount of energy that the body uses.

The authors suggested that people could take supplements to reduce these effects, but only if dietary changes could not meet their needs. They also note that people following vegetarian or vegan diets should take extra care to ensure that they meet their required daily intake of iron, as plant-based iron is less available to the body.

People should speak to a doctor before taking iron supplements and be sure to request a blood test to check their iron levels. Taking too much iron can cause uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects. Calcium and vitamin D help the body build and maintain healthy bones, teeth, and muscles.

These vitamins can help athletes maintain muscle mass and reduce the risk of injuries, such as bone fractures. Studies have shown an association between low levels of coenzyme Q10 and increased fatigue.

Coenzyme Q10 is an enzyme in the mitochondria, which are the parts of cells that generate energy. Experts have linked some conditions with lower levels of coenzyme Q10 in the body, including:. The authors of a review stated that studies have consistently associated low levels of coenzyme Q10 with fatigue.

However, they noted that the results were difficult to interpret, as research papers vary in their definition of fatigue. The research on whether coenzyme Q10 supplementation is useful for athletes has produced mixed results.

For example, a study of moderately trained men found no evidence that it benefitted their exercise capacity. For more in-depth resources about vitamins, minerals, and supplements, visit our dedicated hub. Some athletes use creatine because it is a legal nutritional aid for sports performance.

People can get creatine from red meat and seafood, but it is also available as a supplement. Research has shown that supplementing with creatine can increase muscle mass and improve strength when a person combines it with strength training. Older adults may also be able to use creatine to increase their lean muscle mass and muscle strength.

Commercial supplements often combine creatine with other substances. Researchers have found that a creatine supplement that also contained caffeine, taurine, and amino acids helped athletes feel focused and increased the time that it took for them to feel exhausted.

It is important to note that some of the funding for this study came from companies that make supplements and other products. Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb. A study explored the effects of ashwagandha on endurance in healthy athletic men and women.

People who received the root extract of ashwagandha had a significant increase in physical endurance after 8 and 12 weeks of treatment compared with the participants receiving a placebo. Another study tested the effects of ashwagandha on the endurance of elite cyclists.

After 8 weeks of treatment, the cyclists taking ashwagandha took longer to feel exhausted doing a treadmill test than the cyclists who received a placebo. Vitamins and supplements can be a safe way for athletes to try to improve their performance, but more research is necessary to determine the effectiveness of some supplements.

It is crucial to speak to a doctor before starting to take any new vitamins or other supplements. These substances can interact with other medications that a person might be taking. Depletion of dopamine in healthy volunteers impairs timing, while amphetamine releases synaptic dopamine and speeds up timing.

This indicates that subjects did not feel they were producing more power and consequently more heat. The authors concluded that the "safety switch" or the mechanisms existing in the body to prevent harmful effects are overridden by the drug administration Roelands et al.

Taken together, these data indicate strong ergogenic effects of an increased DA concentration in the brain, without any change in the perception of effort.

The combined effects of DA and NA on performance in the heat were studied by our research group on a number of occasions. Coinciding with this ergogenic effect, the authors observed core temperatures that were much higher compared with the placebo situation.

Interestingly, this occurred without any change in the subjective feelings of thermal sensation or perceived exertion. Similar to the methylphenidate study Roelands et al. Sports Health. The present meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the magnitude of the effects of methylphenidate and amphetamine on cognitive functions central to academic and occupational functioning, including inhibitory control, working memory, short-term episodic memory, and delayed episodic memory.

In addition, we examined the evidence for publication bias. Forty-eight studies total of 1, participants were included in the analyses. We found evidence for small but significant stimulant enhancement effects on inhibitory control and short-term episodic memory.

Small effects on working memory reached significance, based on one of our two analytical approaches. Effects on delayed episodic memory were medium in size. However, because the effects on long-term and working memory were qualified by evidence for publication bias, we conclude that the effect of amphetamine and methylphenidate on the examined facets of healthy cognition is probably modest overall.

In some situations, a small advantage may be valuable, although it is also possible that healthy users resort to stimulants to enhance their energy and motivation more than their cognition. Earlier research has failed to distinguish whether stimulants' effects are small or whether they are nonexistent Ilieva et al.

The present findings supported generally small effects of amphetamine and methylphenidate on executive function and memory. Specifically, in a set of experiments limited to high-quality designs, we found significant enhancement of several cognitive abilities.

The results of this meta-analysis cannot address the important issues of individual differences in stimulant effects or the role of motivational enhancement in helping perform academic or occupational tasks. However, they do confirm the reality of cognitive enhancing effects for normal healthy adults in general, while also indicating that these effects are modest in size.
