Quercetin supplements may interact with some medications. For instance, quercetin might reduce blood pressure in people with high blood pressure, so the supplement could increase the effects of medications used to treat the condition, lowering blood pressure too much.

Quercetin might affect other medications, including Pravachol pravastatin, used to treat high cholesterol and Allegra fexofenadine, an antihistamine used to manage allergy symptoms. Many of the studies on how quercetin interacts with other medications were done on animals or in test tubes.

If you are taking any medication, talk with your healthcare provider about any potential risk there is before starting quercetin. As with any supplement, quercetin isn't regulated by the FDA.

So why is it so useful for our immune system? Quercetin supports immunity via various mechanisms. Firstly, it is an antioxidant. This is useful because infections result in oxidative stress, which can damage body tissues and worsen symptoms.

In animal studies, quercetin proved to be a powerful antioxidant and reduced the oxidative stress caused by the flu virus and hence protected the lungs from damage. Chronic inflammation goes hand in hand with oxidative stress and can drive many chronic diseases — quercetin works as an anti-inflammatory.

Quercetin is often used therapeutically to help with symptoms of asthma, hay fever and allergic reactions. All these conditions involve histamine, which causes redness, swelling, and symptoms such as watery eyes and constricted airways. Quercetin inhibits the release of histamine from white blood cells and so reduces the reaction.

Consumption of apples a concentrated source of quercetin has been linked to a reduction of asthmatic symptoms in children. One study found that women who ate apples during pregnancy bore children with significantly lower rates of asthma and wheezing at 5 years old than the children of pregnant women who did not eat apples.

No associations were found with fruit and vegetables in general. This does not, of course, prove that quercetin was responsible for the reduction in symptoms, but it is an interesting finding. Quercetin has, however, been studied in more depth as an isolated compound in animals.

In one rodent study, anaphylactic reactions to peanuts were completely resolved after 4 weeks of being fed quercetin daily. Note that there is no comparable evidence in humans yet, so please do not start experimenting if you or someone close to you has a peanut allergy.

Quercetin — Best sources Quercetin is considered to be one of the most abundant flavonoids in the human diet. Some of the best sources of quercetin are apples, onions, berries, capers, red grapes, cherries, citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, red wine, black tea and green tea.

Onions are generally considered to rank highest in terms of quercetin content. Interestingly, one study found the levels of quercetin in red onions to be fold higher than in garlic, and 2-fold higher than white onions.

Another study found the amount of quercetin in onion peel to be fold more than the flesh. Levels of quercetin in foods are affected by storage, preparation and even the original growing conditions. Light stimulates the production of quercetin and studies have shown higher levels of quercetin in plants exposed to a greater amount of UV-radiation, adding weight to the theory that quercetin is produced by plants as a defence mechanism against UV exposure.

Quercetin — How does it support immune health? Along with other flavonoids, quercetin has been shown to have antiviral, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-allergic effects.

One of the most common reasons people turn to quercetin is to help with symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis hayfever. Several studies have found quercetin to be a useful anti-inflammatory support and to improve survival and decrease cell damage in a mouse model of sepsis.
