CoQ10 💥 Blood Pressure/Heart/Energy 💥

Coenzyme Q and blood pressure -

Aim: This review of randomized controlled trials RCTs was performed to summarize the evidence on the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on blood pressures among patients with metabolic diseases. Methods: Randomized-controlled trials RCTs published in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases up to 10 August were searched.

Two review authors independently assessed study eligibility, extracted data, and evaluated risk of bias of included studies.

Heterogeneity was measured with a Q-test and with I 2 statistics. CoQ10 is found primarily in fish and meat, but the amounts in food are far less than what can be obtained from supplements. Deficiency is poorly understood, but it may be caused by synthesis problems in the body rather than an insufficiency in the diet.

Low blood levels have been reported in people with heart failure , cardiomyopathy , gingivitis inflammation of the gums , morbid obesity , hypertension , muscular dystrophy, diabetes , AIDS , and in some people on kidney dialysis.

People with phenylketonuria PKU may be deficient in CoQ10 because of dietary restrictions. The test used to assess CoQ10 status is not routinely available from medical laboratories.

CoQ10 supplements come in either granular or oil-based preparations. The evidence is conflicting as to whether one preparation is more bioavailable than the other. A number of tricyclic antidepressants have been shown to inhibit enzymes that require coenzyme Q10 CoQ10 , a nutrient that is needed for normal heart function.

In addition, treatment with amitriptyline has been associated with a reduction in CoQ10 levels. It is therefore possible that CoQ10 deficiency may be a contributing factor to the cardiac side effects that sometimes occur with tricyclic antidepressants.

Some practitioners advise patients taking tricyclic antidepressants to supplement with 30— mg of CoQ10 per day. Many doctors recommend CoQ10 supplementation to prevent the drug-induced decline in CoQ10 levels.

In a randomized study of 21 men with combined hyperlipidemia, ten to twelve weeks of gemfibrozil therapy reduced coenzyme Q10 blood levels to the levels seen in healthy men. The clinical significance of this finding is unknown. A double-blind trial also found that CoQ10 mg per day significantly decreased drug-induced muscle symptoms in people taking statin drugs.

However, in another double-blind trial, CoQ10 in the amount of 60 mg twice a day for one month was not more effective than a placebo for relieving muscle pain. Although the evidence is conflicting regarding whether supplementing with CoQ10 relieves statin-induced muscle symptoms, many doctors recommend CoQ10 supplementation to prevent the drug-induced decline in CoQ10 levels.

Pretreating people with the antioxidant coenzyme Q10 before administration of doxorubicin has reduced cardiac toxicity —an action also reported in animals. Some doctors recommend mg per day.

Phenothiazine drugs like thioridazine can cause changes in heart activity in some people, which might be prevented with coenzyme Q10 supplementation. Therefore, some doctors and pharmacists may recommend coenzyme Q10 supplements to individuals taking thioridazine.

Phenothiazine drugs similar to perphenazine can cause changes in heart activity in some people, which might be prevented by supplementing with coenzyme Q Therefore, some health practitioners may recommend coenzyme Q10 supplementation to people taking perphenazine.

In a group of 16 glaucoma patients treated with a timolol eye preparation, six weeks of oral coenzyme Q10 90 mg per day was reported to reduce timolol-induced cardiovascular side effects without affecting intraocular pressure treatment.

Coenzyme Q10 CoQ10 is structurally similar to vitamin K and may affect blood coagulation. Four case reports describe possible interference by CoQ10 with warfarin activity. It remains unknown how common or rare this interaction is.

Those taking warfarin should only take CoQ10 with the guidance of their doctor. In double-blind trials, treatment with pravastatin and other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors has resulted in depleted blood levels of coenzyme Q10 CoQ Supplementation with 90— mg CoQ10 per day has been shown to prevent reductions in blood levels of CoQ10 due to simvastatin , another drug in the same category as pravastatin.

Propranolol inhibits enzymes dependent on coenzyme Q10 CoQ In one trial, propranolol-induced symptoms were reduced in people given 60 mg of CoQ10 per day. Congestive heart failure patients who are taking CoQ10 should not discontinue taking CoQ10 supplements unless under the supervision of a doctor.

An isolated test tube study reported that the anticancer effect of a certain cholesterol-lowering drug was blocked by addition of CoQ The drug used in the test tube is not used to treat cancer, and preliminary information regarding the use of high amounts of CoQ10 in humans suggests the possibility of anti cancer activity.

What is blood pressure?

People with high cholesterol tend to have lower levels of CoQ10, so CoQ10 has been proposed as a treatment for high cholesterol, but scientific studies are lacking.

There is some evidence it may reduce side effects from conventional treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, which reduce natural levels of CoQ10 in the body. Taking CoQ10 supplements can bring levels back to normal. Plus, studies show that CoQ10 may reduce the muscle pain associated with statin treatment.

Ask your provider if you are interested in taking CoQ10 with statins. CoQ10 supplements may improve heart health and blood sugar and help manage high blood pressure in people with diabetes. Preliminary studies found that CoQ10 improves blood sugar control.

But other studies show no effect. If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor or registered dietitian before taking CoQ Several clinical studies suggest that CoQ10 may help prevent heart damage caused by certain chemotherapy drugs, adriamycin, or other athracycline medications.

More studies are needed. Talk to your provider before taking any herbs or supplements if you are undergoing chemotherapy. Clinical research indicates that introducing CoQ10 prior to heart surgery, including bypass surgery and heart transplantation, can reduce damage caused by free radicals, strengthen heart function, and lower the incidence of irregular heart beat arrhythmias during the recovery phase.

You should not take any supplements before surgery unless your provider approves. Gum disease is a common problem that causes swelling, bleeding, pain, and redness of the gums.

Clinical studies show that people with gum disease tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their gums. A few studies with small numbers of people found that CoQ10 supplements led to faster healing and tissue repair, but more research is needed. Scientific studies are needed to see whether CoQ10 can be safely and effectively used for these health problems and needs.

Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish such as salmon and tuna , organ meats such as liver , and whole grains. Most people get enough CoQ10 through a balanced diet, but supplements may help people with particular health conditions see Uses section , or those taking certain medications see Interactions section.

CoQ10 is available as a supplement in several forms, including soft gel capsules, oral spray, hard shell capsules, and tablets. CoQ10 is also added to various cosmetics. Pediatric DO NOT give CoQ10 to a child under 18 except under the supervision of a health care provider.

For adults 19 years and older: The recommended dose for CoQ10 supplementation is 30 to mg daily. Soft gels tend to be better absorbed than capsules or other preparations. Higher doses may be recommended for specific conditions.

CoQ10 is fat soluble, so it should be taken with a meal containing fat so your body can absorb it. Also, taking CoQ10 at night may help with the body's ability to use it.

Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, you should take dietary supplements only under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider. CoQ10 appears to be safe with no major side effects, except occasional stomach upset.

However, researchers have not done studies and do not know if CoQ10 supplements are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. CoQ10 may lower blood sugar, so people with diabetes should talk with their provider before taking it to avoid the risk of low blood sugar.

Some suggest that it may also lower blood pressure. If you are being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use CoQ10 without first talking to your health care provider. Chemotherapy medications: Researchers are not sure whether CoQ10's antioxidant effect might make some chemotherapy drugs less effective.

Ask your oncologist before taking antioxidants or any supplement along with chemotherapy. Daunorubicin and doxorubicin: CoQ10 may help reduce the toxic effects on the heart caused by daunorubicin Cerubidin and doxorubicin Adriamycin , two chemotherapy medications that are used to treat several kinds of cancer.

Blood pressure medications: CoQ10 may work with blood pressure medications to lower blood pressure. In a clinical study of people taking blood pressure medications, adding CoQ10 supplements allowed them to reduce the doses of these medications.

More research is needed, however. If you take medication for high blood pressure, talk to your provider before taking CoQ10, and DO NOT stop taking your regular medication.

Blood-thinning medications: There have been reports that CoQ10 may make medications such as warfarin Coumadin or clopidigrel Plavix less effective at thinning the blood. If you take blood thinners, ask your provider before taking CoQ Betaxolol Betoptic : CoQ10 supplements may reduce the heart-related side effects of betaxolol drops Betoptic , a beta-blocker medication used to treat glaucoma, without making the medication any less effective.

Can Fam Physician. On the other hand, a number of small studies have suggested that CoQ10 may reduce cardiac toxicity associated with daunorubicin and doxorubicin, two chemotherapy drugs that are associated with heart muscle damage.

Some medications can also lower the concentration of CoQ10 levels in your blood. If you are on treatment for hypertension , the addition of CoQ10 supplements may allow you to decrease the dosage of other antihypertensive drugs.

With that said, there is no guarantee that they will, and you should never change doses unless your doctor gives you the OK. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is needed before any such judgments can be made. COQ10 should only be taken by adults 19 and older.

Recommended dosages range from 30 mg to mg daily, depending on the manufacturer. Soft gel capsules are thought to be absorbed better than other formulations. CoQ10 is fat-soluble, meaning that it needs fat in order to be absorbed and metabolized. For optimal results, take the supplement with a fat-containing meal rather than on an empty stomach.

It is important to note that supplements are not stringently regulated in the United States and that the quality can vary from one manufacturer to the next.

To ensure quality and safety, opt for brands that have been voluntarily submitted for testing by a third-party certifying authority like U. Pharmacopeia USP , NSF International, or ConsumerLab. Certification ensures that the products on the ingredients label are listed.

Certification does not mean that the supplement works. It simply means that the ingredients are pure, that the listed amounts are correct, and that no impurities were found in the supplement.

If you have hypertension, supplements may or may not be useful in reducing your blood pressure. Research is lacking, and it's too soon to suggest that CoQ10 or is any other supplement is anywhere near as effective as proven strategies like routine exercise, improved diet , and smoking cessation.

If you are considering the use of a supplement like CoQ10, tell your healthcare professional. Some supplements may interact with the antihypertensive medications you take. It is also important to monitor your blood pressure regularly when making any changes in your treatment plan.
