There are several ways mindfulness can help you lose weight. Here are some:. Clarity to make better choices. Part of the mindfulness practice entails calming your mind, which enables you to see things more clearly, instead of working so hard to figure them out. So by seeing things more clearly, you will make better choices.

Greater self-control. By calming your mind, you will also calm your emotions, which will lead to greater self-control.

Address your stress. The other effect that calming your emotions will have is make you more resilient to stress, which for many people is a cause of overeating. Overcome emotional issues. The mindfulness practice helps us gain a deeper understanding of those issues, and gives us the inner strength to heal and transform them.

They get all excited about living a healthier lifestyle, and follow their new program religiously. Has this ever happened to you? So, where did they go wrong? They overlooked the most important principle of weight loss: Consistently burn more calories than you consume.

When you start working out, your body will start building muscle mass, which is actually good. And since muscle weighs more than fat, you end up gaining weight.

The added muscle mass can work in your favor. While muscle weighs more than fat, it also requires more calories to build and maintain. So if you want to lose weight by exercising and eating healthy, then you need to pay close attention to not just what you eat, but also how much you eat.

You have to consistently consume fewer calories than what your body requires. This means eating smaller portions and allowing yourself to be hungry before you eat your next meal. THE KEY TO WEIGHT LOSS : Consistently burn more calories than you consume.

But instead of eating immediately when you get hungry, wait about 30 minutes to an hour to allow your body to burn the stored energy, i. body fat. This is how you lose the weight.

What I would suggest is cut your calories by cutting fats and carbohydrates, and increasing your protein intake. You will need more protein to help build the muscle mass.

If you really want to get into exercising, I recommend a combination of weight training and some form of aerobic exercise, such as walking, bike riding, or stair climbing. There are a lot of good books out there that explain this process in greater detail. I suggest getting one to help you learn more, and to stay motivated.

Weight loss is hard, but hard is not the same as impossible. So now that we understand how mindfulness can help us lose weight, the question becomes: How do we apply the practice? There are three main ways: 1 Mindful eating, 2 mindful exercising, and 3 the mindfulness practice. As I mentioned above, mindfulness is about awareness of what is happening in the present moment in our body and mind.

We know how to observe other people, but not ourselves. This takes a little separation from our ego, i. our sense of self. Identify your eating habits. The whole process of mindful eating begins with identifying your current eating habits.

For a few days, keep a log of when, where, and what you eat. Then review it to try and identify any patterns, such as stopping by a favorite fast food restaurant on the way home from work, or rewarding yourself with a heavy meal after a busy work week.

Identify the emotions associated with eating. Are you bored, restless, stressed, or lonely? Make it a habit to pay attention to your emotions. If you keep running from them, or covering them up, you will remain stuck in the same unhealthy patterns.

If you want to eat mindfully, avoid any distractions and give all your attention to your eating. Another reason we overeat is that we eat too fast. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to receive the signal from your stomach that you are full. Drinking water before a meal will interrupt your eating patterns, and force you to be in the present moment and be more mindful.

Furthermore, drinking water helps you stay hydrated, which will improve your mental focus. Eating a healthy and delicious meal can be a joyful experience, instead of a tool for covering up emotions.

Take time to enjoy your food. Notice the different sensations, such as smell, taste, and appearance of your food. By taking more time to fully experience your meal, you are bringing yourself back to the present moment, i. you are being more mindful.

So, savor each bite. This will help you identify emotions associated with eating. Remember, there is nothing wrong with feeling hungry. By exercising and eating regular meals, you keep your metabolism up. If you skip meals, your body goes into survival mode and gets the signal that food is scarce, which causes your metabolism to slow down.

And if you later eat a large meal, it will be more calories than your body requires, and it will simply store the extra calories as body fat.

Ideally, you want to eat 3 regular meals, and couple of small healthy snacks in between. Serve yourself the amount of food that will almost get you to the next meal, so you allow yourself to be hungry for a while before eating again.

If you serve yourself based on your hunger level, you will end up eating too much. BONUS TIP : Use smaller plates, and serving and eating utensils. According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, most participants in the study lost weight simply by using smaller tableware.

The reasoning is they tricked their mind to serve themselves smaller portions, and take smaller bites. You can turn your meal into a meditation session. Basically, eat your meal in silence, slow down, pay close attention to your eating experience, and chew each bite thoroughly. This is how we eat all our meals at our mindfulness retreats: We start out by someone ringing a bell to bring us back to the present moment.

Then someone else reads The Five Contemplationswhich helps us get focused, contemplate the reasons why we eat, and feel gratitude for all the people who worked to provide us with our food.

Specific practices and techniques — meditation , mindful eating , and intuitive eating — can help us learn or relearn how to have a healthy relationship with food and how to remove any problematic feelings we may have surrounding eating. Doing so may constrain us so that we are unable to truly eat intuitively or in a mindful way.

You will learn through these practices how to appreciate and love your body for all it can do for you. When it comes to talking about meditation for weight loss or meditation for eating and working toward developing a healthy relationship with food, it can help to understand what the terminology means.

Stress or emotional eating occurs when people tend to eat and overeat because of strong emotions or feelings, rather than responding to their own internal cues of hunger. Sometimes when we experience strong emotions, these emotions can outweigh our physical feelings of fullness and satiation, and this can result in us overeating.

In these cases, food is used as a coping mechanism, dulling strong emotions momentarily. Feeling stressful emotions can lead to overeating, which leads to guilt or shame, circling back to feeling — and not being able to process or handle — negative emotions or stress.

Mindful eating is a technique or framework you can use to help repair your relationship with food and eating experiences. It calls us to be present and to engage our senses — how the food tastes, smells, and most importantly, how it makes our bodies feel.

Mindful eating incorporates intuitive eating, to help us slow down and listen to our internal cues of true hunger versus cues of satiation, and as such, it can help us reduce or even entirely cease our emotional or binge eating.

While mindful eating can lead to weight loss, losing weight should not be the goal outcome or motivation. If our food choices are made based on a certain physical outcome we are wishing for, it indicates that we have already stopped eating mindfully. The Headspace app includes a session training pack as a complete program to teach mindful eating.

Intuitive eating is a mind-body, non-diet approach to health and wellness. It rejects the concept of dieting and teaches us to trust our bodies and listen to our internal physical cues, with the goal of healing our relationship with food.

Intuitive eating includes principles of mindful eating, however it encompasses a broader expanded philosophy that spans across, moving your body because it feels good to move, and using nutrition information without bias. Just as meditation can help us with stress , sleeping , focus , and much more, it can also have an impact on our relationship with eating and managing our weight.

When it comes to losing weight, we typically think of taking a spin class or opting for the salad instead of a burger for lunch.

Consequently, it may seem counterintuitive to consider sitting in one place and focusing your thoughts, and doing a meditation for weight loss. These sorts of perceptions are only viewing part of the picture. On the other hand, weight loss protocols that included mindfulness interventions such as meditation in addition to eating well and exercising , were seen to be more effective in reducing weight and keeping it off among study participants.

So, why is it possible that meditation helps when it comes to weight loss, exactly? There are physical and psychological factors at play. Another meta-analysis found that generalized meditation helped reduce cortisol and C-reactive protein levels.

If our cortisol levels are consistently high, this is connected with the persistence of obesity over time, according to a study. Psychologically, research shows that meditation may help squash overeating.

Nine out of the 11 studies found that hypnosis offered mild to moderate benefits, but the review's authors note that more research is needed.

A clinical trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition investigated the effects of Eriksonian hypnosis and self-hypnosis on impulsive eating in a group of adults with obesity.

The authors of this study found that both types of hypnosis improved eating behaviors in those with a high disinhibition score, or the tendency to overeat in response to negative feelings. Ericksonian hypnosis is a form of hypnosis that uses indirect suggestions, or suggestions given through stories or metaphors while in a hypnotic state.

As opposed to traditional hypnosis, which uses direct suggestions to create change. It uses precise measuring devices that turn your physiological functions into visual or auditory cues.

Then, working with a trained therapist, you engage in physical and mental exercises while continuing to receive feedback, learning how to change the physiological response. People with low activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex—an area of the brain—may have a harder time controlling how much they eat.

Researchers are looking at how biofeedback may increase activity in this area of the brain for people struggling with their weight. A randomized clinical trial published in Neuroimage investigated how biofeedback training might affect activity in the dlPFC and eating behavior in a group of adults with obesity.

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI for neurofeedback training, which measures and maps brain activity. Researchers conducted the neurofeedback training in one day and followed up with the participants four weeks later.

They found that one neurofeedback session increased activity in the area of the brain that controls eating and improved eating behaviors. However, the researchers also reported improvements in brain activity in the control group.

They suggest that biofeedback might support other therapies aimed at encouraging certain eating behaviors, but more research is needed. Meditation is an ancient practice that aims to reconnect the mind and body to improve your overall sense of well-being.

Some forms of meditation use breathing exercises to maintain mental focus, while others use mindfulness to focus on present thoughts and feelings without judgment. Mindfulness meditation may help improve eating behaviors and promote weight loss, according to a randomized clinical control trial published in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine.

This study found that combining mindfulness meditation with a standard behavioral weight loss program improved eating behaviors and weight loss better than a standard behavioral weight loss program alone. While weight is not an indication of health, your weight has the potential to influence your health.

The mind. As the storage vault for our experiences, emotions, and beliefs — any svelte body goal that we set must click with our subconscious mind or our efforts will be for naught.

From raiding the fridge at midnight, to snacking on junk food between meals, to filling up when we are feeling down, every decision we make digs our pathways that much deeper.

While we may be able cut carbs and follow P90x to drop a quick ten pounds, if we want to be permanently lean and mean then we must make sure the nature and quality of our thoughts are on the highest level.

Since our deeply rooted compulsive thoughts ultimately play out in our " above the surface " conscious mind, we need to dive deep below the surface to identify and correct the problem. Since meditation is, in essence, the very act of interfacing with our deepest mind layers, the millennia old practice is the perfect tool for the job.

By shining a light on the boogeyman hiding under the bed of our conscious mind, meditation clears out the shadowy reasons we unconsciously numb ourselves with food. When it comes weight loss, the link to our mind runs deep.

The struggles some overweight adults face often stem from childhood. Luckily, meditation shines a light on the deepest, darkest depths of our mind, allowing us to purge any shadow that may be holding us back.

With our attention spans lower than ever, anxiety levels are higher than ever. Return to the present with meditation. Like a wildfire, inflammation can fan its flames into something very big.

Chronic inflammation, especially within the brain, is a self perpetuating, highly toxic condition — perfect for anxiety to proliferate. Extinguish it with meditation. All of us require food, warmth, water, and sleep. Here's how meditation deactivates fear.

From dark caves to sunlit skyscrapers, from incoherent grunting to the world wide web, from muddy riverbanks to the far reaches of the solar system, we owe everything to our prefrontal cortex. How meditation builds it up, destroys anxiety. The loudest of them all is fear, their highly influential troop leader.

Here's how meditation tames them. Times are stressful. Unless you meditate. Not having enough of this "calm chemical" can create an array of problems, including anxiety, nervousness, racing thoughts, sleeplessness, and most of all: bad habits.

Here's how meditation uncaps the firehose. We all know it. We have all felt it. When it comes to slaying Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD , meditation is the proverbial magic bullet. Here, we discuss eight psychological and biological reasons meditation is the key to conquering this multilayered disease.

An incredibly complex disease, Bipolar disorder has an interwoven variety of biological, psychological, and sociological contributing factors. From a variety of angles, we discuss how meditation neutralizes Bipolar disorder.

Like a dominant hand, most of us heavily favor one side of our brain. Imaging studies have shown that highly successful, massively creative people use both brain halves in a much more integrated way. Balance your brain with meditation. We have all forgotten where we left our keys, blanked on a friend's name, or let a family member's birthday slip through the cracks.

However, memory loss is not inevitable, meditation helps us stay sharp as a razor regardless of age. Our brains are still wired like cavemen. How meditation "evolves" humanity. Like Einstein, meditation builds-up this brain region.

Meditation increases intelligence in many ways: From making both brain hemispheres work together, to boosting memory, to increasing brain size, to enhancing emotional intelligence EQ. Here are six ways meditation does the job. Through a process called "Neurogenesis," doctors have discovered that our brain's "neuron count" is not set for life.

Living in the age of distraction, it's no surprise that our ability to concentrate has taken a dive. It's called meditation. Think back to a time when you experienced "flow. Did your sense of self fade into oblivion? Did time disappear?

Did the world drop out of sight? Do it again with meditation. However, very few of us realize just how important "human connectedness" is to our well-being.

Here's how meditation conquers loneliness. Thoughts are just thoughts, right? Charge your positive thoughts with meditation. Often called the "happy" neurotransmitter, serotonin is key to relaying signals from one part of the brain to another.

Open the floodgates with meditation. Life unfolds in the present. The problem is, like a monkey swinging from tree branch to tree branch, the human mind's tendency to jump from thought to thought has made us lose touch with the "now.

Whether dropped on a deserted island or elevated to the helm of a startup, with their uncanny ability to navigate uncertainty — people with high fluid intelligence always find a way to thrive.

Become "fluidly intelligent" with meditation. Here's how meditation rockets EQ. Where literally anything is possible? Play on the universe's coolest playground with meditation.

The "law of attraction" is powerful. Harness it with meditation. While science is still looking for a definitive explanation, it's clear that we can raise our own state of consciousness. What's the best way? Mindless eating. We all do it. We shovel down food as quickly as possible, eat when we aren't hungry, eat bad foods, overeat, all without a second thought as to why.

And it's making us fat. Luckily, mindful eating is natural for meditators. Layer after layer, when you peel an onion all the way, what's left? Likewise, after stripping away the reasons we gain weight poor diet, low motivation, no exercise, etc , what's at the root? Master it with meditation.

Get intrinsic motivation. Yep, hating how fat we are makes us fatter. Love yourself with meditation. Conventional wisdom states that, when we get hit by food cravings, we have two options. Meditation unlocks a powerful third option. Life sucks.

Fill the void with meditation. Meditation burns belly fat too? Instead of feeling our uncomfortable emotions, we turn to food. While filling-up our belly might make us feel better for a little while, it doesn't address the deeper reasons for overeating.

Here's how meditation solves emotional eating. But it goes further. Thankfully, meditation dissolves stress. So many products claim to be an "antioxidant. Boost the "mother of all antioxidants" with meditation. Life ends at Well, according to an overwhelming number of studies, we can.

Here's where meditation fits in. Lobsters are biologically immortal. So, how are lobsters "immune" to aging while the rest of the animal kingdom, including us, withers away, DNA into dust?

How meditation "lobsterfies" aging. Telomere shortening can, like a rock star living life in the fast lane, make us age hard and fast even if we are nowhere near over the hill. Learn how meditation's telomere lengthening effectively checkmates father time and mother stress.

We've all seen the headlines, a glass a day can extend your life. And how can meditation allow us to reap the same life lengthening benefits? To the human brain, father time is the cartoon bully. As we get older, one key hormone decreases year after year, speeding up the hands of time, opening the door to disease, and much more.

Luckily, there is a time-tested way to boost this super longevity molecule. Man has sought the elusive "fountain of youth" since the dawn of time. While we don't believe in mythical "stay young forever" potions like our ancestors once did, one magic molecule is making a very strong case.

Swim in it with meditation. What if you could train your body to, like a fully loaded Mack truck, run over any bacteria, virus, or germ crossing your interstate? You can! Thankfully, meditation fills them to the brim. Live long and prosper. Here are four immune system linked brain regions that meditation so conveniently fortifies.

Sleeplessness goes far beyond inconvenience. Luckily, meditation fortifies our brain's sleep center. We all wish we had more hours in the day. Did you know that meditation not only makes you a better lover, but also shifts your libido into overdrive?

Bring sexy back into your life. Do you wish you had more energy? Here's how meditation keeps your "battery" fully charged. Chronic pain, which can go on for months, years, or more, can become so ingrained within our psyche that we feel it's who we are.

It can become our identity. Here, we discuss why meditation is the world's best natural pain relief tool. Have you ever stopped to think about how much stress affects your life? A weapon of mass destruction indeed. Luckily, meditation transcends this "silent killer.

The latest research has confirmed that meditation's incredible benefits do indeed pass from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby.

One study had a group of heart patients practice meditation over the course of one year, with incredible results. Cortisol, a major age-accelerating hormone, is the one chemical where less is more.

Weight loss and meditation -

Meditation helps reduce the urge to engage in addictive habits by giving control over thoughts. This is backed up by research. A study involving 60 people with alcohol addiction found reduced alcohol consumption after three months of practising continuous meditation.

Metta is a specific kind of meditation that makes you feel good about yourself. It does that by giving you positive thoughts about yourself. Kindness for self quickly translates into feelings of compassion and forgiveness towards others, including friends, family and eventually enemies.

It is backed by research as well. Studies show that Metta meditation increases compassion in people. Insomnia is a grave problem worldwide. regular meditation gives control over your thoughts.

A significant cause of not being able to sleep at night is that your mind is full of unnecessary thoughts.

Meditation gives you the capability to drive these thoughts away. A study found that people who do meditation have longer sleeping hours than those who do not.

High blood pressure is a major concern of the time. Meditation helps in lowering blood pressure as well. There have been various studies that have stated this. An analysis of 12 previously done studies showed that meditation helps in reducing blood pressure.

Further, meditation is more effective in older people than in younger people. Meditation is becoming popular around the world for various benefits. If done correctly and regularly, it helps one attain better control over oneself. In addition, it reduces stress and anxiety. As a result, one has better control over cravings.

Therefore, it can effectively aid in losing weight with a proper diet and exercise regimen. However, the benefits of meditation are not limited to weight loss. If done correctly, it can prevent and cure a lot of problems. These include high blood pressure, anxiety issues, and high-stress levels.

In addition, it is helpful for you as it improves self-awareness and increases attention spans. Interestingly, meditating daily for even 15 minutes can help you achieve all these benefits. Yes, meditation can help reduce belly fat eventually.

However, it would help if you complement it with proper diet and exercise. Losing weight or belly fat is how many calories you take in and how many you burn out. What meditation does is that it limits your calorie intake by decreasing the frequency of binge eating and emotional eating.

At the same time, meditation increases the probability that you will have more self-love. It will motivate you to go out and exercise. So meditation indirectly helps you to reduce belly fat. Losing weight or belly fat is just a matter of how many calories you take in and how many you burn out.

You burn calories even in basic metabolic activities like breathing, pumping blood and digestion. In addition, meditation makes you keep still for a short span of time.

However, the calorie burn is the same as when you are in a restive state. Yes, you lose weight when you poop as the body has ejected waste. But this weight loss is temporary. It is because the body is continuously processing food.

So the weight lost after pooping will replenish within a few hours. To lose significant weight, you need to be on a calorie deficit. There are only two ways to do that. Either take fewer calories in eat in moderation or burn more calories exercise.

Yes, yoga and meditation can help lose weight. Yoga creates a stronger connection between your mind and body. It has numerous types, with some focusing on meditation and mindfulness and others helping with strength and endurance.

Hence, you can make yoga a part of your daily exercise regimen for weight loss as it can burn many calories. Mindful eating refers to eating without distraction and being wholly involved in eating. It consists in eating until you are full by recognising hunger cues from the body. As a result of mindful eating, you can distinguish between true hunger and non-hunger.

When you are wholly involved in eating, you can understand when you are full. Therefore, it eliminates the chances of binge eating. It further reduces calorie intake and hence helps in weight loss.

Sleeping well is essential for losing weight. Lack of sleep is associated with hormones like leptin and ghrelin. These hormones increase cravings for unhealthy foods and contribute to increasing weight.

It makes the body spend more energy to keep itself warm. It increases the number of calories burnt and hence helps in reducing weight. Yes, you can lose weight by walking. It is because you are burning calories as you walk.

The number of calories you burn while walking depends on your weight and walking distance. For a pound person, calories per mile burn for every mile of walk. For a pound person, 65 calories per mile burn for every mile of walk.

If your goal is to lose weight, you need to be mindful of the other side of the equation: calorie intake. To effectively lose weight, you must also eat right and not put excess calories in your body. Water helps in a variety of ways in reducing your weight. For starters drinking enough water enables you to suppress your diet.

It reduces calorie intake. Drinking water helps in stimulating your metabolism and hence burning calories as well. Water helps during exercise as well. The water requirement is to distribute the required electrical energy needed for muscle movement during exercise.

Finally, drinking water helps better bowel movement and removes waste from the body. If you are doing right on the eating and exercising front, a possible cause for weight gain may be poor sleep quality. Make it a point to sleep at least 7 hours each night.

You know, " for later. While this biological programming helped our famine facing ancestors , we really shouldn't be cranking up our stress hormones so willy nilly. With our stack of bills, unhealthy relationship s , and unfulfilling work pumping cortisol into our body every waking hour, it's easy to see why the chronic stress vortex has sucked in so many victims.

In University of California-Davis Saron et al researchers found that meditation cuts cortisol levels by more than half! For those of us wishing to be lighter on our feet, dramatically reducing our stress hormones relaxes our body, quiets our mind, cools off our overheated amygdala, and helicopter rescues us from the fat gain vortex.

By reminding our physiology that a " store blubber now or soon perish " zombie apocalypse was but a self-generated mental hoax , meditation lets our body's built in fat burning furnace do its job.

We swing by Jack in the Box to blow off steam. The problem is, while binging on carrot cake might make us feel better for an hour or two, it does nothing to address the deeply ingrained emotional issues which bulldozed us into gorging in the first place.

Making matters worse, every time we use calories to snuff out our feelings — another guilt, shame, and remorse wad gets crammed into our ready to burst emotional baggage.

While rewarding ourselves with a tasty treat every now and then is perfectly fine, when our first impulse reaction to anger, stress, boredom, and sadness is to Usain Bolt into the kitchen, then we know our inner world needs a gut renovation.

If your food cravings have you on the ropes , if you keep sabotaging your diet , then there is a solution.

If you have ever, in an unconscious trance-like state, binged a whole box of Miss Debbie oatmeal cream pies, then you have used food to extinguish your emotions. While emotional hunger can have us eating until we are blue in the face , natural hunger needs just the right amount of food.

While emotional hunger hits us like a ton of bricks , natural hunger comes on gradually, taking hours to build. While emotional hunger usually craves comfort foods loaded with sugar, fat, and salt, natural hunger craves whole, nutritious foods like fruit, lean protein, and vegetables.

As the two-headed monster behind why we humans eat emotionally, both stress and anxiety need to be sacked or the dirty cycle won't stop. Luckily, meditation tackles them harder than NFL hall of fame linebacker, Lawrence Taylor. We have listed a few plays here:. First, meditation raises our emotional break point.

When our mindful armor becomes impenetrable to the things that usually get us hot and bothered, then our unconscious grab to self-medicate with food gets dropped like a bad habit. Second, through the power of neuroplasticity , meditation fortifies our brain's "command and control center" prefrontal cortex.

By dramatically upgrading the wattage needed to make our systems go haywire , meditation ensures a balanced state of consciousness all the livelong day.

Staying equalized helps us crave food when our cells need it, not our emotions. Herbert Benson in the 's, this "opposite of stress" response is the highest healing state for the human body.

Cranking up our relaxation response purges poisonous stress hormones like cortisol from our body, purifying "us" from the inside out. By cleansing our cellular toxic stress residue, meditation rolls out the red carpet for our natural hunger's grand entrance. Fourth, by dramatically reducing the 70, thoughts per day that the human mind thinks, meditation anchors our awareness firmly into the present moment.

Quieting down our impulsive " must raid the fridge right now " monkey mind chatter reveals a treasure buried under years of emotional eating — our natural hunger. In the end, meditation helps us become our own inner Mozart , where all we need to orchestrate our next cell-nourishing meal is the deeply resonant symphony of our growling belly.

A study published in the Journal of Obesity Robinson et al examined the link between body image and weight loss for 14, adults. What did they find? A big surprise, the researchers found that adults who perceived themselves as " fat " were actually far MORE likely to pile on pounds in the future.

This make no sense at all! The truth is, being infatuated with the scale, hating our body , and thinking that life will become magically perfect once we become slim and trim is, paradoxically, often the very reason we gain more weight.

Yep, hating how fat we are often makes us fatter. You have probably heard the old saying, "out of sight, out of mind. Not only are we internalizing and cementing our identity with every " I hate my fatty, fat self " thought that we think, but we are attracting more of the same.

When we train our deep mind to " buy-in " to being overweight through our negative self talk, then we will believe " being fat " is who we truly are.

The mind can be very literal in this way. Once that happens, like a child kicking and screaming, our deep mind will sabotage any efforts diet, exercise, etc we make to change our " fat is the status quo " body. Certain attributes are hard-wired into our DNA when we are born, like the color of our eyes, hair, and skin.

Other attributes, like our capacity for compassion and kindness, we pick up as we go along. University of Wisconsin neuroscientists have shown that when we help others , one specific part of the brain , namely the "right anterior dorsal insula," lights up like a Christmas tree.

Actually that might work! Our world certainly needs all the help it can get. However, if you are handcuffed by a like most of us, then another solution is ideal. Luckily, there's meditation! In a highly cited study , UCLA School of Medicine researchers found that meditation activates the very same " compassionate " brain region as the aforementioned University of Wisconsin study.

What does this mean, exactly? By cranking up our "right anterior dorsal insula," the ancient mind practice literally trains our brain to be kind to everyone and everything, including "us. Is there any coincidence that many of history's greatest humanitarians practiced meditation?

While losing our stubborn belly fat may not win us a Nobel Prize , what's for certain is that making the world a better place starts with the man in the mirror. Meditation ensures the reflection we see is our highest and best version. When we trade our self-hatred for self-compassion a wonderful thing happens.

We stop swimming against the weight loss current. With a positive mindset capable of achieving anything, we accept our imperfections , we accept our current reality, and we become ok with our body as is.

Quite the contrary. It helps us realize that achieving the best version of "us" is both our destiny and our duty.

With this mindset, we have the strength and discipline to stick to any plan moving forward. Will meditation throw out the baby with the bathwater? You are not your dysfunctional thoughts. Found in the wonderfully intoxicating space between each thought, the "real you" is that of pure consciousness.

Harnessing the power of meditation will open up a world you never imagined , with far kinder , deeper, clearer, and more insightful thoughts just the start. Many of us eat mindlessly. We love to shovel down food as quickly as possible, eat when we are not hungry, eat the wrong foods, overeat — all without a second thought as to why.

So, how do we dig ourselves out of this hole? To overcome mindless eating, we need to eat mindfully. Well, a Cornell Unviversity study Wansink et al put 61 of these " effortlessly slim " folks under the microscope to find out what makes them tick.

So what superpowers did the researchers find? Well, it turns out they were far more "in tune " with their body's " inner cues " about when to eat, what to eat, how much to eat, etc.

In other words, whether they knew it or not, the effortlessly slim folks were actually mindful eaters. So, can regular people acquire this skill? As a function of high awareness and sharp intuition, meditation pumps our mindful eating muscle up like a bodybuilder's bicep.

Mindfulness teaches us the art of "checking-in" throughout our day, including when it's time to nourish our beautiful body. By reassessing our "inner-happenings" thoughts, feelings, etc as our gastronomic affairs unfold, we gain a whole new set of power tools.

Am I still hungry or am I full? Do I really need this food? With mindless eating the first domino to fall, meditation can work wonders for our mealtime enjoyment, waistline, and health. When we inhale our meal , we limit ourselves to a mere fraction of the full sensory experience.

Thankfully, mindfulness returns us to the truly multi-dimensional adventure that is food. The skills learned in meditation help us devote our full attention to how our food looks, how it smells, how it feels, and how it tastes.

How about the flavor? How would I describe this meal to someone who has never eaten it before? Like taking a minute to appreciate the immense beauty of a flower , mindful eating allows us to take in the awesomeness of the whole gastronomic experience. With a new love for savory, highly nourishing foods, newly minted meditators often find themselves eating healthier with no real effort on their part.

With a newfound preference for small, flavorful meals, meditation can quickly transform any recovering " stomach stuffer " into a small meal loving foodie. Rather than pigging out on a pint of Häagen-Dazs, we learn to savor the full amazingness of one "optimized" scoop of Sicilian pistachio gelato.

When we immerse ourselves in the limitless molecular wonder contained within each and every bite, then food quantity is of little matter.

In the end, the sense magnification achieved through mindful eating infuses bliss and joy into all areas of life, especially our mealtime experience.

According to the Harvard Health blog , " The theory is that, by eating too quickly, people may not give this intricate hormonal cross-talk system enough time to work. When we focus all of our attention on that small but decadent Ghirardelli brownie, we not only enjoy it much more than before — but we actually need LESS of it!

Mindful eating satisfies our pleasure receptors after just a few slow, meticulous bites. Drop the crash diets. Drop the fad infomercial workout routines. Pickup meditation. Do you sometimes feel like Joey Chestnut after his record setting 72nd hotdog?

If you feel that not finishing your meal borders on the unthinkable , meditation will give you a whole new set of superpowers. What did the researchers uncover? While each of us overeat for our own reasons whatever they may be , meditation's fine tuning of our thoughts and feelings naturally clears out whatever emotional "must bum-rush the kitchen" clutter we may have built up over the years.

A recent North Carolina State University study Dunn et al examined 80 people who were taught mindful eating. more weight than the control group, while keeping it off when re-assessed six months down the road.

Instead of mindlessly shoveling food down the hatch yes, we all do this to a degree , meditation transforms us into a mindful inner expert. Eating when our cells actually require sustenance is so much more enjoyable and fulfilling than mindless overeating.

Mindfulness opens the door to this higher awareness. Do you dream of transforming your dad-bod into a beach-bod? Are you starving yourself to look like a ripped Hollywood movie star?

Are washboard abs the reason you count every calorie? If so, then your weight loss efforts may not only be in vain, but are also likely to crash and burn. A recent University of Toronto meta-analysis study Johnston et al compared the success of various weight loss programs for overweight people.

The scientists discovered that the greatest determinant for success was not which diet the participants followed low carb vs low fat , it was whether they were " extrinsically " or " intrinsically " motivated to lose weight.

My new Instagram pics will get so many likes… I will fit into this cute new dress… I will make my ex so jealous… My doctor will get off my back I can show off my six-pack… My wife will stop bugging me about my weight…".

While our upcoming beach vacation might extrinsically motivate us to drop a quick five or ten pounds, intrinsic motivation is how we achieve long lasting results.

People who are intrinsically motivated find self-satisfaction in the psychological and physiological benefits of weight loss nutrition, mood, energy, self esteem, etc rather than simply looking better or appeasing others. in the short term.

However, after we get the fat loss ball rolling , shifting into "intrinsic" gear is how to achieve long lasting results. As the very best tool for putting our thoughts " up on the rack ," meditation allows us to get " under the hood " of our mind to repair whatever is keeping our mental weight loss engine from firing on all cylinders.

Once meditation gives you power over your inner world , then everything in your outer world will simply fall into place. When that happens, not only will the weight just fall off, but the wonderful energy, great health, and amazing quality of life benefits will keep you intrinsically motivated for a lifetime.

While most of our body fat subcutaneous is the wiggly , jiggly kind that we can see and pinch — there exists an unseen, deeper, more sinister kind of fat which goes beyond simply making our favorite sweater a bit too snug. Wake Forest University assistant professor of endocrinology, Dr.

What kind of harm can it do? So destructive, this stuff sticks to our organs , cranks up our stress hormones, sets our body ablaze with inflammation — while also being linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, and even brain disorders like dementia.

I have nothing to worry about. Think again. If you have resigned yourself to a life of being " skinny-fat " then you might be at risk. Have you tried every belly fat melting diet and exercise routine to no avail? Can you lose fat everywhere on your body except your stubborn midsection?

Well, it might not be your fault. When our insulin receptors don't open up properly, our liver and muscle cells can't store the energy glucose we need from food. This sends our blood sugar to the moon.

All of this extra energy's gotta' go somewhere. And it does… it gets converted to fat. Sticking like crazy-glue to our midsection and vital organs, the best solution for visceral fat might very well be a stick of dynamite. Compounding the problem, with starving , nutritionally deficient cells — insulin resistant people often have an insatiable appetite.

In lab tests at her practice, weight loss bariatric physician, Dr. While the tried and true methods of targeting ultra-stubborn belly fat are a low-sugar diet Paleo, Mediterranean, etc and certain types of exercise High Intensity Interval Training HIIT , there exists an under the radar dark horse.

While meditation is the last thing most people think of when it comes to burning belly fat , the studies prove otherwise. How can a practice that largely targets the brain be so effective at incinerating stubborn belly fat?

Because meditation arrests the secret evil agent responsible for insulin resistance: stress. With the thesis that stress greatly impacts "metabolic syndrome" i. abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, etc , scientists from Cedars-Sinai Research Institute Labrador et al had 47 coronary heart patients practice meditation for 16 weeks.

Amazingly, the meditating heart patients plummeted three key metabolic syndrome markers, including their insulin resistance , glucose, and HOMA scores homeostasis model assessment.

In effect, by pulling the rug out from under two of the most important reasons many of us put on pounds in the first place stress and cellular insulin resistance , meditation lets our stubborn visceral belly fat burning furnace do its job. In , Brown University researchers Loucks et al measured the "everyday mindfulness" levels of participants via a short questionnaire MAAS - Mindful Attention Awareness Scale.

Amazingly, the study found that those who were highly aware of their thoughts and feelings as measured by MAAS actually weighed much less overall BMI , and more amazingly , when put under a high powered x-ray scanner — also had signficantly less abdominal fat than the control group!

Becoming a master mind mechanic through meditation does much more than simply make you calm, smart, and focused — it can seriously upgrade your body.

Honorable Mention: The stress hormone " cortisol " is another a huge contributor to our big fat bellies. Luckily, meditation fixes that too. So, why is the yoyo diet the rule rather than the exception?

Likewise, after stripping away all of the reasons we human beings put on weight including poor diet, low motivation, and lack of exercise , what is at the root?

When we gain awareness and eventual mastery of our subconscious mind through meditation — the weight loss game shifts.

By tapping into our inner "Indiana Jones treasure trove" on a daily basis, we repave any belt-stretching " feed me now or else! By interfacing with our mind on the deepest level, meditation gets to the nitty-gritty of why we emotionally turn to food:.

Did the frustration of getting stuck in traffic for an hour cloud my dinner time judgement? Am I using calories to smother my loneliness? Am I stuffing myself because I have nothing else to look forward to? This higher awareness allows us to know when our food cravings are the result of " emotional hijacking " versus when our cells actually require nutrition as nature intended.

By shining a light on the boogeyman hiding under the bed of our conscious mind, meditation clears out the shadowy reasons we unconsciously numb ourselves with food.

Meditation is a practice that Weught to Weight loss and meditation the mind Replenish natural nourishment body to achieve a sense of Weigjt. Weight loss and meditation -

Then someone else reads The Five Contemplations , which helps us get focused, contemplate the reasons why we eat, and feel gratitude for all the people who worked to provide us with our food.

Then we begin eating slowly and mindfully. Occasionally, someone will ring the bell, and we all stop eating momentarily to enjoy the sound, then we resume eating.

All our meals are in silence. It is a very peaceful and enlightening experience. Many people join a gym and start working out without a clear understanding of how to exercise properly. By not doing the exercises properly, you will not get the full benefit of each exercise.

You can also hurt yourself by not stretching, warming up, or by using too much weight. It is beyond the scope of this article to explain how to perform each exercise properly. There are entire books written on the subject.

What I do want to touch on is applying mindfulness to your exercise routine. Performing the exercises properly. Each exercise has a specific muscle, or group of muscles, that it is intended to work. Many people will use momentum by using their back and legs to move the weights.

The main reasons for this are usually ego, and the desire to show progress. To do the exercises properly, you have to use strict form and pay close attention i. For example, the curling exercise with a barbell or dumbbells is intended to work the biceps. However, many people will use their legs and back to help lift the weight, and use the bicep muscles very little.

Performing the right amount of exercise. When you first start working out, almost anything you do will yield results. But after a few weeks, the gains will diminish because your body will begin to adapt to the exercise stimulus.

So what you have to do in order to keep making gains is gradually increase amount of weight of each exercise, and the intensity.

Knowing how much of these is enough, without hurting yourself, takes mindfulness. Again, there are many books and articles that explain these techniques in detail. I suggest getting a good understanding of weight training. This will help you get the most from your exercise routine and avoid getting hurt, which would derail all your efforts.

There are three basic ways to develop mindfulness: 1 Meditation, 2 mindful activities, and 3 writing meditation.

Neither of them require a lot of your time, and they can help you tremendously in changing old habits, and improve many other areas of your life. Mindfulness meditation. By meditating, you train your mind to be more observant.

As your thoughts settle down, everything becomes clearer. The idea is to keep bringing it back to your breath. Over time, your mind will settle down more and more, and it will become easier to stick with your weight loss plan. Mindful activities.

Another way to develop mindfulness is to make a conscious effort to be more mindful. We actually already touched on this above with mindful eating.

What you do is pick any activity you like, and focus all your attention on it. For example, you can wash the dishes mindfully. Instead of letting your mind wander off, slow down and pay close attention to all aspects of washing dishes, such as soaking the dishes, applying the soap, and rinsing them.

You can also notice the sensory aspects of the activity, such as sight, sound, and physical sensations. Other activities that are great for practicing mindfulness include walking, folding clothes, and even yard work.

Basically, any activity that requires little thought is good for mindfulness training. Then we can apply that mindfulness to activities that require more attention, such as driving or our job duties. Writing meditation. This is a practice I developed to help you overcome stubborn habits that are preventing you from being at peace.

What you do is take the scripted meditation, which is a set of positive affirmations, and copy it by hand over and over. This will imprint the affirmations into your subconscious mind, and they will manifest themselves in your life without any conscious effort.

And it only takes about minutes a day. This will reinforce the healthier habits in your mind, and make it easier for you to achieve your weight loss goals.

Click here to download a copy of the exercise. Remember that mindfulness is simply a practice of improving our awareness, and not a religion. This means that people of all different faiths can practice mindfulness without it interfering with their spiritual beliefs. In fact, mindfulness will help them better understand their spiritual faith.
