I knew their head of research and development, Dr Gareth Evans, as I had supervised him here at Sheffield Hallam during his mechanical engineering degree and later his PhD. A heat exchanger is designed to reuse waste, like in the KitKat project.

But this time, rather than working in an existing factory, we were based in our own facilities here in Sheffield, building a heat exchanger from scratch.

We used our understanding of fluid dynamics to come up with ways of improving energy efficiency, and to investigate new manufacturing techniques. We even built a wind tunnel specifically for the project, to improve the performance of the heat exchanger. This heat exchanger was commercialised between and , and units were made.

These were successfully installed in manufacturing sites and retail outlets in the hospitality sector, delivering energy savings of 3, MWh a year and a CO2 reduction of 1, tonnes over two years. It is now being used in industrial kitchens as well as factories, and is gaining interest from major restaurant chains in the UK.

We will be using the knowledge we've gained on these projects to help provide more engineering solutions to the challenges of how to produce the food we need.

Our centre is expanding, with new dedicated leads for each of our key research themes: digital connectivity, healthier lives, feeding a growing population, and a continued focus on food system sustainability. This is a hugely important area.

Food processing is full of heating and cooling. Some products will go through up to four heating and cooling cycles in their production.

This process increases their shelf life and delivers greater convenience for us as consumers. Energy is a big cost to the industry. Anything that can be done to make those processes more efficient will result in a cost saving — and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Here at the National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering we will continue to deliver excellence in sustainable solutions for the global food system, working with our partners through research and innovation. Post Comment. Five ways to conserve energy in your plant 1. Upgrade motors While variable frequency drives VFDs are not a new technology, they are effective : VFDs allow motors to run at different speeds and will save energy.

Install efficient lighting How often do you consider the type of light bulb used throughout your facility? Consider alternative energy sources Solar panels are becoming more commonplace but are still used less than other energy sources , such as fossil fuels.

Review layout and strategic placement of equipment Every wire or pipe throughout a system will inevitably experience some degree of energy loss, even when equipment runs as it should barring any shortages or problems. Complete an energy audit While general tips are helpful, no two plants are alike.
