Caloric restriction and skin aging -

The main source of DNA damage is usually ultraviolet radiation from the sun. DR practices have been demonstrated to have numerous health benefits including protection against inflammation, reactive oxygen species and DNA damage.

Given the involvement of these processes in ageing skin, it is not unreasonable to expect DR to have an effect on skin ageing.

The effects of dietary restriction on the skin have primarily been studied in animal models. Overall, they point to a beneficial effect of DR for skin health and ageing. Glycation is considered to be one of the primary drivers of skin ageing.

The fact that calorie restriction opposes this process is therefore a good indication that DR has the potential to slow skin ageing. Studies suggest that this increase in macrophage activity may play a role in promoting skin healing in rodents subjected to DR.

However, not all studies are in agreement, with some research suggesting that calorie restriction actually slows healing. DR has also been found to promote the renewal of stem cells , though its effects on stem cells in the skin specifically are relatively under investigated. Evidence suggests dietary restriction may inhibit the progression of various skin diseases including psoriasis, acne, and certain skin cancers.

In cultured melanoma cells for example, nutrient deprivation was found to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the effects of dietary restriction on the skin, and on health more generally, are less well studied in humans.

We understand the processes behind skin ageing relatively well, and evidence from animal models suggests that dietary restriction should slow these processes.

However, extensive research is required before we can say with confidence whether dietary restriction effects human skin ageing. Sign up for our newletter and get the latest breakthroughs direct to your inbox. Why Does Your Skin Age? Diet in dermatology: Part I.

The CR diet appeared to delay the consequences of aging on the cells. Some of these age-defying effects were maintained for months even after the animal were put back on a normal diet, while others required caloric restriction to continue.

In contrast, the transcriptional signatures of fibroblasts taken from adults fed a high-fat diet were similar to those of old fibroblasts.

The study, which was funded by the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, is the first-ever randomized controlled trial that looked at the long-term impact of calorie restriction. The participants had a body mass indexor BMI, ranging from 22 to People in the calorie-restricted group were given three prepared meals each day for the first month to familiarize themselves with portion sizes. They were also provided behavioral counseling about diet over the first 24 weeks.
