One example of a high-performance athlete development program is the Elite Player Performance Plan EPPP , a long-term strategy within English football aimed at developing more and better homegrown players.

But in order to facilitate development safely and effectively we need to better understand the holistic considerations associated with training youth populations. The aim of this article is to highlight a broad range of those factors for those who are already working with or have ambitions of working with youth populations, using the youth athlete development roadmap I have constructed based on the literature and my experiences.

Chronological age is how most sports systems categorise players in training and competition. However, that neglects how various biological subsystems develop at different times throughout childhood and adolescence, and the large variation in the timing and tempo of development between individuals.

Those working with youth athletes should, therefore, assess growth and maturation, i. Although monitoring growth is straightforward, maturation is slightly more complex. The most common assessment of maturity status involves utilising anthropometric measures collected at three-month intervals and plotting growth curves to identify adolescence [10,16].

The age at the maximum rate of growth is the most-used marker of somatic maturity, and is termed peak height velocity PHV. An easy way to think of PHV is as the adolescent growth spurt, which typically occurs around age 12 for girls and 14 in boys.

However, the timing will be highly individualised and influenced by ethnicity, environment and lifestyle [15]. This spread could potentially result in athletes who are pre-PHV training and competing with players who are post-PHV. Maturity status has been identified as a significant contributor to increased strength, anaerobic and explosive power, speed and agility [24,15].

Therefore, not only does this raise questions about athlete safety but also competitive fairness. This may lead to more favourable decisions in TID, team selection and retention in youth development systems.

Athlete 1 is post-PHV and Athlete 2 is at PHV. Yet Athlete 1 is likely to perform better due mainly to her maturity-related physical advantage. The advancement of pediatric exercise science has shown that all components of fitness are trainable to some degree throughout childhood and adolescence [11].

However, the type of exercises coaches select should align with maturation-associated adaptations [11]. Lloyd and Oliver suggest that physical development gains during childhood before and at PHV are almost exclusively associated with neural adaptations: motor unit recruitment, firing frequency and synchronisation.

Strength gains during adolescence and early adulthood post-PHV are driven by a combination of neural, structural and architectural changes, which are the result of increases in hormonal concentrations such as testosterone and growth hormone [13].

Implementing activities that optimise the appropriate adaptation at the relevant time is fundamental to the process of physical development see Table 1 for an example of the types of activity relevant to maturational status.

Although maturational status may provide general guidance for exercise prescription, the most important factor in programme design is the training age and movement competence of the youth athlete. Three long term athlete development models closely align with each other, but address youth development from different angles. These are the long-term athlete development LTAD model by Balyi and Hamilton [1] ; the youth physical development YPD model by Lloyd and Oliver [11] ; and the developmental model of sports participation DMSP by Cote et al.

Although these models focus on athlete development, physical development and sports participation, respectively, they share two major points:. Up to this point we have discussed only physical considerations, but psychosocial aspects of development are highly relevant within youth populations.

Ultimately, youth athletes are full-time students and part-time athletes, meaning they face the challenge of balancing their available time and energy into both sporting and academic development. Although academic demands are consistent across most youth populations, they are likely to experience other stressors.

These may include negative life events, elevated expectations to perform, intensified training and competition schedules and increased travel demands. Youth athletes are full-time students and part-time athletes. They are not mini-adults. Regardless of type, elevated stress causes hormone perturbation, immunosuppression, impaired muscle repair and increased muscle tension.

But professional sports bodies are keen for home-grown players to reach their full potential, to nourish each generation that is looking to come through the ranks. If clubs are not run in the right way, talented children and young adults will not be given their best shot at reaching the top of their sport.

This presents significant challenge, both to the children developing later than their peers, and to those engaged in the processes of identifying and developing talented young athletes.

Accordingly, improvements in assessment and management of growth and maturation in young athletes have been identified as a priority by organisations, such as the Premier League, Lawn Tennis Association, and British Gymnastics for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of youth development programmes.

For all players to have the best chance to reach their potential, assessment and consideration of growth and maturation is critical. Clubs must consider maturity when making decisions about training, competition and team selection.
