In good times it seems relatively innocuous, but now it can be a life-and-death issue, particularly for those over 60 or in compromised health. The problem is that these healthy behaviors are habits that we need to cultivate and, as we know, habits are notoriously hard to develop and change.

In order to develop healthy habits, we need to bring them into conscious awareness—we need to be mindful of them. Mindfulness is a key to habit change because it makes behaviors that have become unconscious conscious.

Once we are aware of them, we are in a position to make a change. Pay closer attention at these times. Find ways to make the action you want to take easier—for example, wear a rubber band on your wrist or put a colored dot on your knuckle to remind you to keep your hands from your face.

If you do act out the habit, be kind to yourself and commit to continuing with the healthy habit. Notice changes over time and appreciate the movement you are making in the right direction.

Above all, be kind to yourself—beating yourself up is not a good recipe for beneficial change. The other key area for working with our habits in virus-times is our mental and emotional habits. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Making big changes all at once can be overwhelming and difficult to sustain. Instead, focus on making small changes you can stick with over time. For example, if you want to eat healthier, start by adding one serving of fruits or vegetables to your meals each day.

Or, if you have not been physically active for the past five years, you can start with a two-mile run in the first month. Once your body is accustomed to the physical challenge, you can increase it to five miles, ten miles, etc.

Habit forming is essentially a psychology game. A good example is Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, with 28 gold medals.

In fact, he was a relatively slow swimmer when he was younger. His goal when he was ten years old was simply to make the junior national team. He achieved that goal, and then he set his sights on making the Olympic team, and the rest is history. There will be times when you slip up and make unhealthy choices.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on track. The most important thing is to be patient and persistent. With time and effort, you can cultivate healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Remember, cultivating healthy habits is a journey, not a destination.

There will be ups and downs along the way. But if you keep at it, you will eventually reach your goals and achieve a healthier, happier you. About the Author: Macgyver Ng is the founder of Healthcare Career Groove , the career portal for healthcare professionals.
