If you eat a balanced diet, your eyes should be getting all of the nutrients they need. One of the most common trace minerals in your body, zinc is concentrated in the retina. Although the role of zinc in eye health is unclear, some scientists speculate that a lack of zinc may contribute to macular degeneration.

A balanced diet usually provides you with adequate amounts of zinc, but researchers are studying the long-term effect of zinc supplements. There are dangers associated with high doses of zinc because it may reduce copper or iron absorption into your bloodstream. Several years ago, results from a study called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study AREDS provided encouraging news regarding vision and diet.

The study, funded by the National Eye Institute, included people with dry macular degeneration, at different stages of the disease. Some participants were given a daily high-dose vitamin and mineral supplement of vitamin A beta carotene , vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper.

Others were given an inactive pill placebo. Over a five-year period, the participants were closely monitored, and outcomes from the two groups were compared. However, only participants in the intermediate and advanced stages of macular degeneration benefited from the supplements.

Participants with no age-related macular degeneration or in early stages of the disease saw no benefit. A few years later, the same research group conducted a second study called AREDS2 to determine if they could improve the formulation.

Based on this study, the AREDS2 formula was altered. Beta carotene was removed and lutein and zeaxanthin were added. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulations are sold at local pharmacies. You might consider taking the formulations if you have intermediate dry macular degeneration in one or both eyes or advanced dry macular degeneration in one eye but not the other and you want to keep the disease from progressing to a more advanced stage.

It may take years before you see positive results. But in addition to benefits to your eyesight, adopting these healthy habits can go a long way toward improving your overall health and quality of life. Mayo Clinic Guide to Better Vision, Sophie J. We've made some updates to our Privacy Policy.

Supplements were not effective for people with mild or very advanced stages. Lutein and zeaxanthin supplements taken as part of the AREDS2 formulation were seen to reduce the need for cataract surgery by 32 percent in people who initially had low dietary levels of these carotenoids.

More research is needed to better understand the connection between supplements and eye health. The following supplements, including the antioxidants found in AREDS2 capsules, have been shown to be beneficial for some people. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids. Carotenoids are pigments found in plants and in your retina.

Supplementing these pigments helps increase their density in your retina. They also absorb high-energy blue and ultraviolet light that can damage your eyes.

Also found naturally in your eyes, zinc is a powerful antioxidant that protects against cell damage. Zinc is the primary mineral in the AREDS2 formulation. When taking zinc, copper absorption is lessened. Vitamin B1 is essential for the health of your eyes.

Research has also shown that infants whose formula contains DHA develop better vision than infants not given DHA. Several large studies show that vitamin C reduces the risk of getting some types of cataracts.

Two of these studies also found that a combination of vitamins C and E supplements reduced risk for cataracts and slowed the progression of cataracts. Beta carotene is the primary source of vitamin A in the human diet. Beta carotene is a type of plant pigment called a carotenoid that exists in many colorful fruits and vegetables.

When a person consumes carotenoids, their body converts the pigments into vitamin A. Discover more foods rich in Vitamin A here. Alpha tocopherol is a form of vitamin E that has particularly powerful antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants help fight free radicals , which damage tissues throughout the body. Sometimes, free radicals may damage proteins within the eye. This damage can result in the development of cloudy areas — cataracts — on the lens of the eye.

A meta-analyses concluded that a high intake of vitamin E, whether through the diet or supplementation, may reduce the risk of developing cataracts.

Discover more foods rich in vitamin E here. Vitamin C plays an important role in the eye itself, protecting against UV light damage. While the concentration of vitamin C in the eyes lessens with age, diet and supplementation can counteract this.

Vitamin C also helps protect against oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is a key factor in two of the most common age-related cataracts: cortical and nuclear cataracts. Cortical cataracts develop on the edges of the lens, while nuclear cataracts occur deep in their center. A year longitudinal study investigated different factors that may help prevent nuclear cataract development.

The study involved more than 1, pairs of female twins. They also had clearer lenses overall. However, a review concluded that more research is necessary to fully identify the role of vitamin C as an anticataract therapy.

A review found that people with tend to have lower blood B12 levels. However, researchers noted insufficient evidence to confirm a direct link. However, this particular study only included women. Further research is, therefore, necessary to support the use of B-vitamins in preventing AMD in both males and females.

A nationwide study in South Korea found a link between a reduced intake of vitamin B3 niacin and glaucoma. In people with glaucoma , a buildup of fluid within the eye puts pressure on the optic nerve.

Over time, this can damage the nerve, resulting in vision loss. A small study also found that supplementation of vitamin B1 and mecobalamin may reduce symptoms of dry eye disease. People who do not consume animal products can easily consume enough vitamin B12 through supplements and fortified foodstuffs.

Zinc allows vitamin A to travel from the liver to the retina to produce melanin. Melanin is a pigment that protects the eyes from UV light. Zinc supplementation may help people who have AMD or are at risk of developing the condition.

The retina of the eye contains a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids help protect the retina from damage and degeneration. Small animal studies have found that omega-3 supplementation can slow age-related retina degradation.

However, further human studies are necessary to fully assess the link. Many doctors recommend omega-3 fatty acids for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. A person with dry eye syndrome does not produce enough tears to keep the eyes lubricated.

However, a large randomized control study found no significant improvement in dry eye symptoms when compared to a placebo. A varied diet rich in nutritionally-dense foods can often provide adequate amounts of all vitamins and minerals.

However, some people may require additional supplementation to reach certain nutritional targets if their diet cannot provide this. In some cases, taking supplements may lead to side effects, so it is important for people to speak with a doctor before making large dietary changes.

If you consider the taste of fish or fish oil unappealing, some seeds high in omega-3 include:. Vitamin A can benefit vision in multiple ways. It helps maintain a clear cornea transparent front surface of the eye , allowing light to enter the eye correctly. Vitamin A is also a component of rhodopsin , a protein found in photoreceptors cells rods , allowing vision in low light conditions.

While omega-3 might be the most recommended nutrient for dry eye, diets rich in vitamin A can also improve tear quality.

When possible, try taking vitamin A supplements with healthy fat such as avocado , as it absorbs better. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids produced by plants. They give fruits and vegetables a yellow or reddish hue. However, the chlorophyll in some vegetables alters the colouring, resulting in dark green.

Lutein and zeaxanthin antioxidants are recommended by the Canadian Association of Optometrists CAO to help maintain sharp vision. The carotenoids in the macula and retina also help filter blue light to prevent damage.

They can also help prevent multiple eye problems, including cataracts , UV damage , and dry eye. Lutein can also help to slow the progression of macular degeneration, which can lead to vision impairment and blindness.

Foods that contain lutein and zeaxanthin include :. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants fight free radicals, unstable molecules that can harm cells. Diets rich in vitamin C help maintain clear vision and support the tear film by improving lubrication and production.

In the eye, the cornea and sclera front of the eye contain high amounts of collagen. Supporting collagen in the eye can reduce the risk of developing cataracts and slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.
